Did you know this week’s Tiggerific Tuesday Disney Trivia about the mechanical operation of Walt Disney’s original Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln?
As we discussed yesterday, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln became Walt Disney’s and his creative team’s first human-form Audio-Animatronic when it debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair and the first of its kind at Disneyland Park when it later moved to its permanent residence there. To create the “alarmingly” realistic robotic figure, Walt Disney had WED (now Imagineering) adapt a tape system used on the United States Navy’s Polaris nuclear submarine, the patent for which he paid $17,500. (Via Neal Gabler’s Walt Disney, 2006.) (Mr. Lincoln was updated in 2009 to receive a fully-electronic head, a first for human-form Disney Audio-Animatronic figures, which were formerly hydraulically operated.)
